Stamp databases were first introduced in 1984. When it was first launched it was the only one of its kind and also the first commercial database. Over the years many companies have come out with databases for stamps. Some of these companies have been providing updates to customers at least once year to its customers. One of the top databases is known simply as Stamp Collectors Data Base. This one has made it to the number one spot most of the time and is still considered to be the best one. It can be run on most versions of Microsoft Windows operating systems, such as Windows XP, 2000 and so on.
Now let us look at why having a database for you stamp collection is important. A good database will maintain a detailed record of your stamp collection. It will help you with keeping track of the stamp collection and also let you know how much it is worth. With some databases you will have access to an unlimited number of data, which means both serious collectors and novices alike will be able to keep track of what they have. If you want you can even divide your collection into separate groups and catalogs.
Most stamp databases will come with a set of fields allowing you to catalog a large set of information such as face value, date of issue, country of origin, catalog number, design, color, topic, watermark, condition, purchase date, perforation, price, present market value and so on. It will have search and filter options which will make it a lot easier to find the information you are looking for. This is in a way a built in search engine feature. After you get used to this kind of tool, you may wonder how you kept track of your collection all these years.
