Stamp Organization
One consideration you need to give to your collection is what you plan to collect. Do you ant to collect by country, by a particular era in history, specific stamps featuring animals or other characters, first-day covers, and so forth. Next, the serious collector needs to understand the different classifications. These include commemoratives or specials (such as mint or those stamps that have never been used on an envelope), different formats such as a booklet or a sheet of stamps. Some people also collect special delivery, airmail, and postage due stamps. Once you have made these decisions this will allow you to sort your stamps according to where and how you plan to focus your collection.
Most stamp collectors buy catalogs, subscribe to a magazine, or have some way to identify the stamps they collect. This allows for the collection to be categorized properly. Catalogs offer a wealth of information which might include the description, prices, and other details.
Once you have finished working with a stamp it is important to offer it some type of protection so that it is not ripped or damaged in any way. The best protection is offered from some type of stamp album. Depending on your finances and your future intentions with your collection you might choose to buy a stamp album. You can buy a commercial album in most coin and stamp stores. Most of them offer plastic sleeves on each page. You can also make your own albums if you see what is available on the market and then adapt it to meet your personal needs.
Many people who are really into stamp collecting also have the use of stamp collecting software. This allows you to organize and catalog your stamp collection. Basically these programs offer spreadsheets so that you can enter the information you want to maintain on each stamp. Depending on the sophistication of the software, several programs offer many advanced features offering more customized reports.
Stamp collecting is one of the most popular hobbies among people. It is estimated that there are around 20 million collectors in the United States. Most people collecting stamps do so for the pure enjoyment it offers while others create huge collections. If your goal is to be one of the latter collectors then it is wise that you have a plan of action so that you will be able to organize and enjoy what you collect.
