Ludwig van Beethoven - First Day of Issue: 20th of January 1970

Stamp collecting has been a hobby of choice for thousands of people around the world ever since the postal system came into being. It is perhaps a way of honoring the timeless ‘messenger’ entrusted in delivering messages from one place to another. We have perhaps heard that in ancient times if a chief or a king wanted to send a message to another chief (friend or foe,) they used the swiftest messengers. But the responsibility did not come without risks as the messenger was expected to be swift and thus would only be allowed to carry very light weapons. The messenger had to at times pass through dangerous jungle with wild animals and there was also the risk of capture by enemy tribes. Thus underlines the importance of the stamp when it came into being as it was a sign of the trust placed on the postal system by the sender.

Today, globally there are thousands of philatelists who will guard their stamp collections jealously. Among the most collected stamps by many philatelists are stamps with famous people. Famous people may be politicians, war-time heroes and leaders, musicians, athletes, writers and scientists and many others. Here we are talking people like Ludwig Beethoven, Albert Einstein, George Washington, Jesse Owens, William Shakespeare, Napoleon Bonaparte, Winston Churchill, Franklin Roosevelt and even Adolf Hitler for those with a convoluted sense of dry humor.

But how does one go about finding famous people stamps? This requires patience and dedication. The stamps are a bit rare though there are unscrupulous business people who make replicas that are way far from the original stamps. Collectors are an option from where one can find the famous people stamps. But not many collectors will be willing to part with prized antique stamps even for large sums of money. There are stamp dealers that deal with all kinds of stamps to quench any philatelist’s thirst. And these have become even easier to find with the online revolution as there are websites dedicated to helping collectors find the stamps they may be looking for.

Perhaps more interesting is that many famous people today are into the craze of finding famous people stamps as well. Though they may not talk about it as openly as any regular collector would, they may be an option on where to get the much treasured stamps. For these kinds of stamps, once one gets them it’s very important to take good care of them as replacing them may not be a walk in the park.
